Warts are growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts are round or oval-shaped, varying in size from a few millimeters to few centimeters. They are usually asymptomatic, but sometimes, may be associated with pain and/or itching. The most common areas of the body affected include hands, feet, face, forehead, and genital areas. They are usually harmless, however, can be disfiguring and embarrassing, and occasionally they itch or hurt (particularly on the feet). An important fact about warts is that they are infectious and have a tendency to spread locally and from one body part to another, and also from one person to another. They can be of various types like common warts, filiform warts, plane warts, and plantar warts. There occurs crust formation 2-3 days post-procedure, which then falls off on its own in the next 5-7 days. So it takes around 7-10 days in total for complete recovery of the skin. It is advisable not to pick the crusts to prevent scar formation. Once treated adequately, the results are permanent, however, in some individuals, warts may recur and may require two or more treatment sessions.
