The sexually transmitted infection (STI) genital herpes causes blisters and ulcers. The herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes it, and it is spread through skin-to-skin contact. Herpes can affect any part of the body, but it is most commonly found on the genitals, the anus, or the mouth. The blisters heal over time, but the virus that causes them is incurable. Herpes outbreaks frequently reoccur. Treatment can alleviate herpes symptoms, but the virus cannot be cured and remains in the body for the rest of one's life. This means that blisters usually reappear every now and then. Using condoms or dental dams during sex reduces your chances of contracting genital herpes.
