Nail fungal infections are the most common nail diseases, accounting for roughly half of all nail abnormalities. Fungus is naturally present in the body, but when it grows too large, it can cause problems. Onychomycosis and tinea unguium are other names for them. Both fingernails and toenails are prone to infection, which manifests as discoloration, thickening, and crumbling edges. Toenails are the most commonly affected. Approximately 10% of the adult population suffers from nail fungus infection. Treating nail fungus infections can be a time-consuming and costly process. There are antifungal medications that are taken orally, topical ointments, and alternative therapies. There are over-the-counter creams and ointments available, but they have not proven to be very effective. Among the oral medications for nail fungus infection are Terbinafine (Lamisil) itraconazole (Sporanox) fluconazole (Diflucan) It can take up to 4 months for these medications to completely replace the infected nail with an uninfected nail. In some extreme cases, a doctor will remove the entire nail.
